Champions of Champions

Your 2010 Plano Tournament of Champions Winner...

What is certainly going to be remembered as one of WaterWorks Softball's finest moments almost never happened. Less than a week before the start of the tournament and mere hours before the registration cut-off; the team found themselves sitting out on another Tournament of Champions due to a paperwork mishap. After registering, the league office had informed the team that they were unable to locate a roster for the tournament eligible WW team. The Red Striped Warriors faced a similar problem with last year's TOC registration and, despite persistent pleading with league officials the team was turned down in '09. This year however, the team's crafty veteran lefty, Mike Carroll was thinking one step ahead by making a copy of the roster prior to submitting it to the league. A quick phone call and trip to Heritage Yards secured a spot in the big dance for WW and served as foreshadowing for a team that plays by the rules and never gives up.

The Grey Men that Bring Mayhem started the day against CottonWood Sports; an unfamiliar foe to WW. Early on the team showed some signs of light rust having not played in a few weeks. Cloudy and chilly conditions made bats cold and throws inaccurate.Once acclimated to the weather, WW settled in and played a rock-solid defensive game that allowed a sputtering offense to catch up and eventually take the lead and the game. After the game, speedy WW outfielder ZB would have to leave for a soccer tournament

Next up, The Gotti Boys. Again, an opponent new to WW and again the bats were slow to start. A sluggish offense would be reoccurring theme throughout the day as for the second game in a row WW would continuously strand runners in scoring position. Thankfully a watertight defense allowed an anemic offense to build comfortable a comfortable lead and maintain it throughout the game.

The win against the Gotti Boys meant that WW had secured their side of the winners bracket and at least third place. This also meant that WW expected to face a tough opponent in the semi-finals. The bottom half of the winners bracket had two teams that were tournament favorites. The Saints, who are known as a bitter rival of WW, had won at least three tournaments against WW in the championship game. Using primarily tournament players, the Saints typically have no problems tearing their way through tournaments. The other favorite, and new team to the tournament, VSSI made their mark by dropping the Siants handily after winning their 'play in' game. Waterworks picked up a break in the bottom half of the bracket when VSSI lost to SMASH. This meant that VSSI and Saints would have to play each other again in an elimination game and made the road to the finals a little less bumpy for WW.

The only thing that was know about SMASH was that they beat VSSI to make it to the Semi-Finals. Based on VSSI's reputation, this was no small task so WW expected a fight. WW also had to deal with more attrition when speedster Jonathan Frizwell had to leave the tournament for a previous engagement. What they got was a run-rule win against a team that put its leadoff batter on base only once and failed to score him. For the third straight game Mike Carroll shined on the hill and was backed by a strong defensive effort. When all was said and done WW cleaned house in the winners bracket giving up only ten runs in three games. The lineup also appeared to be gaining some momentum with the run-rule.

More to be posted/edited when I feel like it...

WaterWorks Softball 2010 OTA

One by one members of the water works softball team assembled at mike c's Plano estate to prepare to embark on the first annual WW organized team activity. after Mike's truck and Al's excursion were loaded the group set out on a trip they would not soon forget.

The first stop was the 7-11 on spring creek and75 to grab some last minute provisions. JW used this time to make some tall bloody marys in the parking lot. Not too long after, they were sharing the highway into Dallas with everyday commuters dreading the Thursday that awaited them. The drive through Dallas want bad at all. No accidents or major slowdowns. The group in Al's truck passed the time watching eastbound and down while everyone in mike's truck probably talked about investment strategies and 401k. The gaggle made it into Austin around 11 and were greeted by Mike's better half and and a jaw dropping view of lake Travis. *The phone camera does not do the view any justice.
Mike and Tammy gave the grand tour and shared stories of the lake house remodeling project. Most of the guys wondered around the house half listening and half mumbling to themselves about how unbelievable the view was. After all were unpacked mike handed out the guest bags containing golf balls, tees, divot tool, sunscreen and most importantly, the course notes and pictures prepared and printed by Mike himself. The notes were incredibly accurate, which meant that Mikeprobably had to learn the course the hard way. The group was met by former WW legend Pat, who's legacy includes breaking a bat while hitting and getting dropped by a thrown ball while running to second on a double play. Mike led the way to the course where most of the guys had time to waste all of their good swings on the driving range. The days tournament would be a three team best ball. The groups were split by WW seniority. Mike, Scott, JW and TJ. Pat, Pete, Rik and Rory. Jay,AL,Al's nephew and Byron. The course was in pretty good shape and there were deer everywhere. I honestly don't know how we managed not to hit at least one. When all was said/done the seniors beat the not-so-seniors by a stroke and the juniors fell out of contention on the back nine.

After a short trip back to the house Mike started working on dinner, brauts and sliders accompanied with baked beans, etc. Completely full of good food and beer, we spent the rest of the night socializing and catching up. The guest house had darts, ping pong and poker so we all stayed pretty busy. Pat, Jay, Rik and B stayed up playing poker. That's where Pat got the bright idea that he needed to mess with somebody. Since Al was on the couch in the guest house he was the perfect target. I guess the best he could do was tobasco sauce. After a couple of attempts to get some in his mouth Al finally woke up and Pat was already back in his seat. The next time around Al woke up with pat in mid stride and the bottle of hot sauce right in from of the couch catching Pat, red handed I guess. All in all a below average prank, but given the resources at Pat's disposal what else could you expect. When it was all said and done I think Rik and Jay ended up with winning big at the poker table.

Mike had tee times early next morning and after a night of drinking most of the guys woke up a little slower than they did Thursday morning. We had to change courses since the course we had our tee times scheduled with had their greens aerated so we ended up on the sister course (Wish I could remember the name). This was a beautiful course and was pretty fun to play. Having a late start on the day we missed our tee times but the pro shop was nice enough to cut us loose right before the start of a couples tournament. The group split the teams up again but, since there wasn't any money on the line I can't remember who was with who but, Scott, Pete and B ended the day with the best score. This round of golf was like a big plate of pancakes. All exciting at first but by then end your sick of them (credit Mitch Hedberg). I have never wanted to get off the course so bad in my life. Nursing a small hangover plus 6 hours off sleep in the past 2 nights and a sore body from the round before, the 18th hole was a welcome sight. I made taking a shower a top priority. After heating up some leftovers some of the guys tried to take naps but, that ended up being a mistake since most everyone thinks pranks on people who are sleeping are cool. Since a nap wasn't an option and Pete wasn't satisfied that others weren't drinking as much as he was, I made my drink of choice for the night Mt Dew and vodka. It was my best effort at a buckshot but since we didn't have redbull I had to improvise. Al worked on getting his stew on. I guess when you are making a big ass bowl of chilli you need to have small strips of wood to keep the heat on the bowl evenly distributed. I guess the wood we brought was too big so after a short trip into town and the purchase of a demo tool later, JW was working on splitting logs with this little hatchet in his sandles. This was actually a pretty impressive site. I think a midget indian would have rather taken a spoon into battle than that little tomahawk looking thing JW was using. In the mean time Scott was busy taking on all challengers a washers. They stew was top notch and definitely a highlight of the trip. Al did a great job on this and I recommend that this be part of the tradition. It didn't take to long after dinner and after most everyone had a chance to play washers for a tournament to break out. We all picked teams on a 'free agent' basis and were ranked by the official Washers Tournament Committee headed up by B.

1. JW-Al
2. Mike-Pete
3. TJ-Jay
4. Rik-Scott
5. Rory-Byron

One of the more memorable sights of the tournament was Scott's signature "Silent but Deadly Squat Toss" which led his team to the finals. During that trip, Rik and Scott ran into Rory and Byron where they survived the back-roll-double-bird finishing move from B. It was in the third place match where B double faulted twice to give S&R a shot at the title. S&R's dreams of becoming the WWOTA2010WTC were destroyed when JW and Al destroyed  S&R in double elimination final. This tournament was a blast. Fun to play and watch.

Playing Softball. So Easy, a Caveman Can Do It

Fresh off a loss to the best team to ever play softball (and let's face it. probably some of the smartest, most successful people I have ever met) WW squared off against the jokers who had easily dropped WW in their first meeting 20-9. Chris H, sparked a WW rally in the first with a three run bomb to left center. This of course came after the jokers' catcher commented on Heiny not wearing an undershirt and showing off his guns. I have to side with the catcher on this one. I mean come on, is it ever so hot outside that removing 8 inches of fabric from you t-shirt is going to bring enough relief to really make a difference? Or are your little, tiny muscles just not strong enough to maneuver through all of that cotton? To be completely honest, I'm really just jealous. I haven't hit a ball out of the park in over a year and I'm starting to get a little depressed. Back to the game... Chris continued where he left off in the field making some great plays at short and at times ranging into the outfield to rob some hits. Hands down. Player of the game. An honorable mention has to go to TJ who walked twice in single inning and made sure to introduce himself formally to the Geico caveman who was playing RF for the jokers. This directly led to the caveman's pop-up. I was actually expecting move from a group of people who's primary tool prior to the wheel was a club. In any event WW exacted revenge on the jokers and are now 2 games back from 500 ball. Boner of the Week goes to Brian M for misplaying the line drive and letting it roll to the wall. It happens to the best of us... Be sure to ask Joe or Byron about their misadventures trying to verify the sighting of a midget after HooHoos.

WW Adventures in Loserville

I'm still trying to figure out the format I want to use here at the blog, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to try and keep it family friendly which is going to make it all the more difficult to write about this last game. Long story short... we played the AA under 30 year old team upa. Apparently, softball is really important to them and they are the shiz. I'm pretty sure that about 90% of them still live at home and 63% of them have their parents drive them to the games. One of them does have a mo-ped and a couple still have their huffy skate boards so that helps with the commute to the ball park. Now, enough about them, lets get to the game.

The second batter of the game hit a seed up the middle shin high and dropped Pete. Pete would actually finish the inning before being replaced by Mike who spent most of the night praying for his life. It didn't take too long for the game to get out of hand a against a makeshift WW lineup. You know you've made it in life when you can steal an uncontested base when you are up 10 runs. At one point in the game Jay talked some noise when the upa third baseman got ate up from a sharp groundball off the bat of TJ. This got upa all pizzed off. And come on... let's face it. You'd be upset too if you were pounding a team into the ground and they gave you a little lip. This playful banter from J was met with an all out assault on second base. One thing is for sure... these upa guys are probably very successful in life. Boner of the weak goes to Pete for not getting out of the way of that line drive in the first. He also get POTW for not crying after he got hit.

Mistakes Keep WW from a .500 Record

What else is new, WW dropped another close one. This time in extras against goodfellas, a team WW has handled in the past. The first play of the game was definitely a little bit of foreshadowing as Byron turned a routine play into a complete disaster. Even though he made a text book catch, getting his feet in position and making a quick transaction, he was unable to close the play out by throwing a hail mary to right field. This fueled a 4 run first by GFs. WW was able to take the lead and control it for a couple of innings. A lot of small mistakes here and there kept WW from finishing the game with the lead. In the end WW would get dropped in the bottom half of the last inning. There isn't much more to talk about except for the BOTW... we already talked about B a little so let's talk about some of the other contenders. Mike walked a batter for the first time in 52 years(not really though. I have to add the disclaimer b/c he really is old and people might take that statement seriously. I actually shouldn't give him a hard time about being old, I'm gaining weight, losing hair and eyesight. I don't know why I stayed in parentheses so long). Jay, also pronounced J couldn't manage a waist high toss from less than 40 feet away that would have sent the game into extras. We haven't seen a play that has meant so much to a season since opening night when JW dropped that fly ball. I am also going to add in a dishonorable mention to the heart of the lineup. Yeah... the guys with all the zeros by their names in the box score. You can't win if you don't score. That's how I try to live my life every day. In the end (wait for it..) the boner of the week goes to Byron... The first play of the game cost WW at least 2 runs, he was also part of the middle of the order that couldn't find home plate... actually I don't think they ever found first base. Let's also not forget that WW is 0-3 with B in the lineup... 1-0 without him. I'm not a mathematician... but Byron Sucks...

Repsie and JW talking knee braces.... WW down 1 after 4.

WW Weather Update

After being initially PO'd by today's weather forecast I think there is a pretty good chance we could be playing tonight. The weather channel is reporting no more showers after 1PM and based on the radar loops Plano didn't get too much rain.

WaterWorst : How the Storied Franchise Started 0-2

After experiencing a bitter loss to upa, WW set their sites on the jackers in an effort to right the ship and save the season. WW would suffer their first setback of the night before the first pitch. One of their top prospects was a no show. After a couple of texts back/forth we found out that the prospect had 'forgotten' about the game and was out of town. Despite having several players who are too old to remember what happened five minutes ago, everyone on the team has always managed to remember to make it to the park (albeit not always at the correct time). WW would have to play this game with 9, a fact that the jackers exploited at every opportunity. Routine singles were turned into triples due to the wider gaps. Despite a great effort on D throughout the game, you just can't be in two places at once. WW would end up allowing 20 runs and only reached the plate 9 times. There is no way to know for sure if having a 10th guys would have won the game for us. I do know that giving away an out at least every other inning on offense and giving up bases when you can't cover the outfield is a good battleplan for losing. To make matters worse, the jokers weren't really all that funny.

Boner of the week goes to the player who forgot to show up. Player of the week will go to Rik... I think I remember him making a nice catch in the outfield. WW 0-2 will take on the texans(0-1) next in the hopes of killing the losing streak.

WW Softball, winless in 2010

No matter which way you slice it losing sucks. Especially when you know you can beat a team, but there were some positive signs in WW's 18-17 loss to upa. First off these guys were a legit AA team. There was not a weak spot in their lineup and they flat out hit the ball. They had to of had us by a good 10yrs in average age and they still only beat us by a single run. To put up 17 runs in the first game of the season to a team playing down is not bad.
WW came out of the gate hot putting up 5 runs in the first but was not able to hold the lead in the field where the watched upa cross the plate 5 times. Both teams went a little soft in the second where the bad guys eventually took a 3 run lead. WW bounced back in the third and controlled the game 12-11. The lead was short lived and WW had to climb back to take the lead in the top half of the last inning. The lead was again cut and upa would eventually take the lead for good in the bottom half of the last inning with a walk off hit.
This seemed to be a typical WW game where everyone hit and played solid D. There were some hiccups here and there, but that is to be expected when spring training was canceled due to record snow. It's tough to pick out a player of the week when you run up 17 runs. I'd like to think the spark that fueled our rallies was Mike C. When he's not saving lives he's killing the right side of the field. Leading off our lineup having lived longer in one lifetime than upa's team combined Mike C is deserving of PotW. Now on to the boner of the week... our proud candidates consist of Byron, for forgetting socks and shoes (not sure if this really counts since this has become standard operating procedure), Jay for playing right field like he was blindfolded and JW for dropping that infield fly with a runner moving on the bases killing a chance at a double play and more importantly WW's chances at winning the league this year. Never before in the history of softball has so much hung in the balance of an infield pop-up. Some softball analysts are wondering if WW will ever be able to recover from this gaffe. JW... you have earned Boner of the Week!
Be sure to check this week as WW(0-1) will be in an all out war in a loser take all game for last place against the Jokers(0-1). We will try the live updating again... hopefully with more/better information/results.

Live Update...

Ww up 12 11 on a AA team after 3...

Opening Day 2010

The loooong off-season will be put out of it's misery tonight as WW is set to take on a team new to Friday nights, UPA. WW hopes to pick up where they left off with another Friday night championship to make it four straight. An end-of-season tournament title is also in their cross-hairs. Hopefully we can track 3 full seasons of games without getting sick of posting. Look for Live-Updates from the players in game this season. Oh yeah... we got us some technology in the off-season.

The Face Plant and the Bounce Back saves!!

Let's try to get everyone caught up since you last visited.

Updating several games in the ongoing quest of the WaterWorks dynasty to secure the holy grail of softball. We were finally able to slip some games in under Mother Nature's wrath of fury that has descended upon the north part of Plano for some time now. We came off a month long "siesta" back on Sept 25th to play Chipotle, and proceeded to drop a "big stinky steamer" right in the middle of Field #2. The stench from this field was very noticeable once the clock showed 0:00. The Burrito Boys walked away with a 17-9 victory...honestly don't remember too many specifics about the game other than we had a very stout lineup from top to bottom that night, but we could not figure out how to cure the "cranial-rectal inversion" that everyone in the lineup had been infected with during the time off. Game was not even as close as the final score showed, as we scored several runs in our last AB when the game was already out of hand. One thing memorable about that game was JW hitting two straight foul balls which looped into the WaterWorks bench area through a small opening in the fence where it did not seem remotely possible that a ball could fit. In the post game interview, JW mentioned he has a talent for fitting things through openings were it doesn't seem possible....reporter did not elaborate any further on this quote. That is pretty sad when the most memorable thing from a game is two "bizarre" foul balls being hit. Date to circle on the calendar is Nov 13th....rematch game!!

One week later, we found ourselves playing uninspired ball yet again, trailing late in the game to the Texans (very clever and imaginative team name), and facing the possibility of being part of a "dark and shameful" event in the storied history of WaterWorks.....back to back losses!! We finally realized this was an opponent that we had "bageled" in our first meeting 15-0, and thus proceeded to right the ship and pull out a hard fought one run victory (13-12)! Now that my friends is WaterWorks softball.....losing two games in a row is not an option!! Don't remember any specifics about the game, but do recall the after game victory snacks at our Plano hideout were very satisfying! Our compliments to the chef on his imaginative use of chicken wings, batter and sauce! Additional details about this victory may be available in future posts.

Last Friday night, after again being idle for almost 3 straight weeks, we faced one of our arch nemesis opponents, ESI Out...which was coming off two nice Wins against Chipotle & Last Call. WaterWorks again saw the scoreboard not being kind to them in the early stages of the contest with the bad guys being up 8-1 at the end of 2 rounds. This number could have been much uglier, if it had not been for a fine diving catch by ZB on a line drive to right-center. This ESPN highlight catch also seemed to provide a calming effect on the team, as it wouldn't be a WW softball game if there wasn't a Bennett diving in the outfield! The ball seemed to really be "jumping" off the bat of the ESI players, and they all seemed to use the same hitting stick.....which led to several WaterWorks players speculating something was afoul here. This could have meant the bat in question was juiced, the ball being hit was altered (i.e. microwaved), or the more likely answer being we needed some type of excuse to hang our hats on for why we weren't making the necessary plays....I'll let you come to your own conclusion on this mystery. As the good guys came to the plate in the top of the 3rd, the gate seemed to open and the "beast" was awakened. WaterWorks proceeded to post a touchdown in our half of the inning and pull the contest even again at 8-8. Highlights of that inning included, TJ performing a homeplate shuffle around the Catcher to safely slap the plate in a close play at home (this move should not be confused with the Ickey Shuffle, as T-ball's version was much smoother). This exciting action at home plate was setup by the play of WaterWork's All-star 3rd base coach, Buckshot, who waved TJ around for his dance with the Catcher. Buckshot's playbook for coaching 3rd base in this contest was very bare bones, in fact it only involved one play, which we will call....GO!!! And yes, for those of you wondering, this is indeed the same Buckshot who has played in the last two FF Superbowls (a fact that few know)!!

Bad guys were able to plate 3 more in their bottom half of the inning. So, WaterWorks came in facing a 3 run deficit and the shrinking clock not being in their favor. Brian leads off and reaches base safely to bring up Rik. "Wild Thing" gets into one and burns the outfield, with BM able to score from 1st on the play. After hitting a ball that burned the outfielder, Rik is now all jacked up on Mountain Dew and rounds 2nd base like a spider monkey only to be picked off by a heads up play by the infielder cutting off the throw coming in from the outfield. Still down by 2 and the clock slowly winding down, WaterWorks once again reached down deep with "the most interesting man in the world" reaching base and then Lord Byron lighting up the sky with a bomb over the Left-fielder's head that resulted in a game tying 2 run round tripper. This seemed to totally "shoot the wheels off" of the bad guys and WaterWorks opened up a can to finish with 18 runs, which can mainly be attributed to the inspired 3rd base coaching by Buckshot....yes,"GO" was the word of the day and it was heard often. When you've been in 2 straight FF SuperBowls and experienced the "moment on the big stage", it makes handling these crunch time decisions seem as easy as telling someone to GO. With time being expired on the game clock by the end of our half of the innning, we closed the door on the ESI girls to secure a very satisfying 18-13 victory!! We again had to turn to Buckshot to reel in the last out and close out the contest.....as mentioned before, that big game experience really pays off!!

Player Of The Week had many candidates this week including:
1. Rik - Wild Thing had a few nice catches in LF and the "big hit" to get the last inning of offense going. Ironically the same play that put him in the running for POTW (the Big Hit) is the same play that took him out with previously mentioned "spider monkey" base running.
2. TJ - pretty solid night behind the plate, good night with the bat, and the T-ball Shuffle mentioned earlier to tally a run.
3. ZB - A nice night at the plate and the previously discussed diving catch that stopped the bleeding in the early innings.
4. Buckshot - strong candidate this week with a good night at the plate, the unbelievable mastery of the 3rd base coaching box, and the game saving catch to end it (that may be overstating it a little, but seems I heard him describing it that way to ZB after the game). And again there is the 2 FF SuperBowl appearances that have to be factored in!

All strong and worthy candidates, but the POTW goes to Dr. Humphrey. Lord Byron was involved in turning two DPs to shut down innings, along with a nice night at the plate including the Big Bomb in the last inning to pull us even.

Boner Of The Week candidate list was quite a bit shorter. J-dub was looking like a contender with his coughing up of ground balls. Trivia question: what do JW and T.O. have in common.....besides the obvious resemblance?? Neither can seem to catch a ball these days!!

J-dub was bailed out for Boner Of The Week by this week's recipient......drumroll............none other than the Round Mound of Sound.......vaJJ....Mr. Jay Jamison! JJ accomplished something few have done in SLOW pitch softball, and this feat deserves the honor and recognition bestowed on it for BOTW! JJ struck out swinging two times in a row to start off the game. The first one was so bad, it led some to be concerned that maybe he was in the midst of a walking stroke, but we were able to discredit that notion after his 2nd appearance at the plate seemed to give evidence to the possibility that this was just a normal AB for him. We are searching online for a 14" softball that we hope to be able to put into play before JJ's plate appearances. Congrats again Jay on this honor!!

WaterWorks is now sitting in our "comfy seat" at the top of the standings at 3-1, but the four remaining games will all be tough ones....revenge game against Chipotle, 2nd game against ESI Out and two games versus the gang from Last Call. Next challenger to step into the ring is Last Call!!

Isn't There Something I'm supposed To Do On Friday Nights

Past two weeks have been washed outAt this rate we will be playing through December.

The Gauntlet Has Been Laid Down.

The powers that be (The softball scheduling dude) has seen it fit to assemble the greatest softball teams ever to play the game (on Friday nights in Plano) into one single hyper-competitive league. This fall we will be seeing our old foes/beeotches Esi-out as well as Last Call, a respected adversary of old. The Texans will be in the mix as well as Chipotle who we faced in the semi-finals of the Summer EOS tourney. This is basically what we have all been asking for all along. None of these games will be cakewalks and we should expect to see a lot of close games going 7 innings. Or we could just beat the tinkle out of everyone and clinch the league 6 weeks in.

We kick off the season this Friday, August 28 against the Texans and then take a week off before facing our arch-rivals ESI-Bee-och on the September 11th.

Monday, August 17, 2009

Well that was a waste of a perfectly good Saturday

When the WW club first began discussing the Summer EOS it seemed as though it would never happen. Too many guys out of town and just not enough interest. I mean, come on. Who wants to run around in the Texas sun every other hour when you could be at home doing something constructive... like anything but playing softball. After a few e-mail exchanges the push for fielding a Summer EOS team gained some momentum. Two days short of the deadline we had finally set our roster with 12 guys. Only 5 of which are regular WW players. A quick scramble to get enough WW jerseys together was successfully and the Summer EOS was a go.

The day long journey for WW began at 9:00AM on field two against Big Sticks. WW had faced these guys in the past and no one could recall them ever really being a threat. After only scoring one run in the top of the first, BS would take the lead by 4. WW would need a few innings to take control of the game for good. The nail in the coffin was Bryan Jones' 3-run home run off the scoreboard in the 5th. BS couldn't manage to get their offense going after the first couple of innings, but they were able to keep the game close enough to play all seven innings.

WW wouldn't play again until Noon so most of the players went their separate ways. The Jones' of course went to grab a beer (You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning). Rik and Chris H went on to help two separate teams to victory filling in for missing players. JW, Melton, Mike Long and Byron went to Little Gus' and didn't have to wait too long to be seated at the counter. Now, I have a love/hate relationship with little Gus'. I get there, and I see all of these specials and I remember how good it was the last time I came. Then I start doing the math trying to figure out which special costs the least but comes with the greatest amount of food. I then precede to eat until I'm sick and begin to hate LG' for having such great food. I had the two eggs two pancakes special with sausage. It also comes with potatoes; which I hadn't had there before. This was far and away the best breakfast I've paid for in Texas. I'm coming out and saying it, Little Gus' is better than Poor Richards. Enough with the food review...

Next up for WW would be the Vipers. These guys were unknown to the WW crew but looked to be a formidable foe. The team definitely looked the part, and I overheard a couple of their players talking about where they played college ball. WW again would need a little bit of time to warm up and would have to struggle to maintain a lead, once again being the visiting team. Solid defense is what bought WW enough time to create a comfortable lead. WW would again play all seven innings and outlast the Vipers.

After an hour wait WW moved to field 1 and took on Next Generation. Again WW faced an opponent they had never meet before in competition so they weren't sure what to expect. A couple of guys from NG couldn't help but mention that they 5 guys that played college ball. I think I was more worried about the fact that their SS had neon green shoes. Actually he wasn't too bad. A couple of guys though he had good range but when you are playing in shallow left you kind of make it look like you have range. I don't really recall this game being too close. We were the visiting team again but we got ahead and didn't look back. Mike Long blasted a 3run shot to help put the game away and the WW bats made up for a couple of mental mistakes. The most notable play of the game was a pure hustle play by Chris H. Morris knew when he hit the ball that it was going to be a close play so he took two steps and dove to first. Unfortunately his hustle wasn't rewarded and he was thrown out by 50 feet. Very good effort though.

Two hours later WW would face off against Chipotle who had no problems moving through the lower bracket, run ruling a couple of teams along the way. WW would not have a problem against the burrito makers and would actually win their first and only run rule game of the day. The defensive play of the game came at the hands of Macek, who went all the way to the fence chasing down a towering fly ball only to stop at the fence... camp out for a few seconds and then make the catch with his back to the infield. I couldn't tell if he just got lost with a 'Who put this fence here' moment or it he just stopped to pray but he eventually reeled in the popup and put an end to a potential rally. Although WW won this game convincingly, we also suffered our biggest set-back of the tournament when Bryan Jones came up lame after his AB in the first inning with a hamstring injury. Byron moved to Right center to try and fill the void in the out field but after the game Bryan would not return to the defensive lineup and only saw one more AB in a pinch-hitting role. This win would put WW in the finals against the Saints who eventually manhandled Chipotle to win the losers bracket.

With Bryan Jones out of the lineup WW went on to face the Aints in the finals. WW would actually be the home team for the first time in the tournament but got off to a rocky start finishing the first inning down 3. The second inning was over quick and WW found themselves down 7-1. WW was able to stop the Aints bats for a couple of innings and was able to tie the game up by the fourth inning. The Aints would eventually take back control of the game and hand WW their first loss of the tourny.

Five minutes later we would start it all over again. This time around WW would be the visiting team and would have control of the game early. After the first couple of innings the score went back and forth. until time expired with both teams tied. We went to a full count extra innings format where WW would take a three run lead. The Aints then came up to bat with the meat of their order and had some solid clutch basehits to put the game away.

It was rough to play all day long only to see us lose to a team like that. This isn't unfamiliar teritory for WW. This happened a year or two ago against the same team, and I remember the same frustrated feeling. It sucks to go all day playing good, smart ball only to lose in with two outs left in the final inning. It really sucks to do that losing to a bunch of D-bags. Aside from Mike Cs lifelong friend Zad, these guys are just a bunch of thugs. They are pretty much what I don't like about softball. Running their mouths all the time, throwing behind runners and running their mouths all of the time. I think the problem with guys like these is that they never really played ball at a higher level so they don't know what it is like to play with class since they've never had an authority figure to teach them. They also haven't played against guys that would put up their crap. Whether or not they just weren't good at baseball or their parents couldn't keep from dropping them on their heads I just can't stand teams like that, and I really hate losing to them.

Thugs or not, the Aints were a good hitting team. Those guys play a lot of tournaments and probably treat softball much like we treat our livelihoods. For a bunch of once a week league players, I think it says a lot to be within two outs from beating a time like the Aints. Despite the physical errors and lack of hits with 2out RISP, which typically comes with playing playing ball for 8 hours out of the day we still played these guys tight and I believe that all of our guys left it all out on the field.
